THE arts have been given a boost thanks to a newly formed agency bringing entertainment to people's doorsteps.

In a district that already has a strong creative reputation and boasts a number of successful festivals, residents can expect to see even more performances and exhibitions taking place in the near future.

The Richmondshire Arts Development Agency has been set up to support local community arts projects. Fronted by creative director Robin Battersby, the agency will develop provisions and encourage events in the district.

A former theatre manager and playwright, Mr Battersby hopes to reach as wide an audience as possible and extend people's experience and appreciation of the arts

"There is an amazing amount of arts activity already going on in the district which can benefit from having a professional development agency co-ordinating and taking an overview of things," he said.

"This can help enhance quality, increase funding opportunities, develop new initiatives, and encourage participation and audience development, as well as raise the profile of the arts and creative industries."

The agency's first aim is to set up a network of community venues that are willing to host touring productions and exhibitions.

Funded by North Yorkshire County Council's Single Regeneration Budget programme, together with grants from the District Council and Yorkshire Arts, the Agency will be based at the Middleham Key Centre.
