A SCAFFOLDING worker's "wanton violence" in Harrogate has left him facing jail.

Trevor Stuart Gill, 20, pleaded guilty yesterday to two charges of assault, two of affray and one of damage, on November 1, in the East Parade and Station Parade area and in the Odeon Cinema after he had drunk a bottle of vodka in 30 minutes.

Gill, of St Winifred's Avenue, Harrogate, who entered his pleas via a television link between the town's magistrates' court and Hull Prison, was remanded in custody to be sentenced at York Crown Court on January 6.

Sarah Tyrer, prosecuting, said Gill's "wanton violence" began at about 7.45pm in East Parade where he headbutted passer-by Michael Briggs.

Gill then went to the cinema with a friend and began shouting before punching staff member Nathan Fielding in the face.

Mrs Tyrer said Gill was then picked up by security cameras at 8.30pm outside a takeaway in Station Parade where he was seen to punch another man several times.

He then jumped on the bonnet of a taxi and ran over two more cars, putting a dent in one of them before he was tracked to nearby One Arch where he attacked two more men.

Gill's solicitor, David Cam-idge, said he had drunk a full bottle of vodka in 30 minutes and did not know what he was doing.

District Judge John Foster told Gill he would have to go to Crown Court for sentence.

A magistrates' court has a maximum punishment of 12 months in custody and the judge said: "I am satisfied I don't have adequate powers."
