All three North-East teams in the English Under-19 North A League were in action at the weekend, but only Billingham Wolves came out winners.

The Teessiders had home advantage against Sunderland Tomahawks and were 8-2 victors.

Tomahawks without a point this season went behind in the third minute when Scott Ward put Wolves ahead on the powerplay. Two further powerplay goals from David Thomas and Ward put Billingham 3-0 ahead at the end of the first period.

Sunderland's first reply came two minutes in the middle period from Dean Hamilton. Ricky Box struck twice for Billingham before Jonathan Heslop netted Tomahawks second in the final minute of the period.

Wolves were short-handed when Andrew Thornton hit home the sixth and Liam Telfer and James McCabe completed the scoring.

Whitley Braves played host to Altrincham Tigers and lost 6-7 despite having the lead on several occasions. Tigers, without a point this season, went ahead at 06.38 only for Braves to go 2-1 ahead with strikes from Dale Howey and Sean Croft. Altrincham were on level terms before the end of the first period.

Twice in the middle period Whitley were ahead through Croft and Daniel Good only for Tigers to strike a third.

The final period saw Braves netminder Stephen Hoult busier of the netminders as Altrincham levelled at 4-4 and again at 5-5. This was following Howey putting Whitley 5-4 ahead.

Altrincham took the lead for the second time at 54.48 which lasted less than a minute when Rob Wilson equalised. There was only 51 seconds left when Altrincham scored the winning goal to pull them off the bottom of the table.

Whitley Tomahawks travelled to meet Altrincham Jets in the English Under-16 North A League and were held to a 4-4 draw. Peter Zajac gave Whitley a second minute lead and Jets drew level after nine minutes.

Benn Campbell and Andrew Wile gave Tomahawks a 3-1 lead at 24.29 only for Jets to cut the deficit a minute later. Three minutes into the final period Shaun Kippin restored Whitkey's two-goal advantage. The home side hit their third two minutes later and earned a point with their equalising goal with three minutes remaining.

Tomahawks: Peter Zajac 1+3, Ben Campbell 1+1, Andrew Wile, Shaun Kippin 1+0.

Whitley Arrows and Sunderland Cherokees met at Hillheads in the English Under-12 North A League action. Cherokees opened the account after 69 seconds through Grant Sharp and he doubled the lead eight seconds later. Sharp notched another brace before Callum Watson scored Arrows first consolation replay. Nathan Salem put Cherokees 5-1 ahead going into the final period.

Salem (2) and Sharp increased the visitors lead to 8-1 before Watson broke clear to strike Whitley's second when short-handed.

Salem, Callum Davies and Sharp completed the scoring for an 11-2 Sunderland victory. Whitley and Sunderland played an entertaining end to end encounter and a great advert for youth hockey.

Cherokees: Grant Sharp 6+1, Nathan Salem 4+1, Callum Davies 1+1, Matthew Williamson, Joshua Lalande, Jake Shanks, Joe Royle 0+1.

Sunderland Commanches were 3-1 winners at Nottingham Tigers in an Under-14 North Challenge. Tigers went into a sixth minute lead and Daniel Murdy put Commanches level at 11.30.

Mark Robson and Nathan Salem scored in the second and final periods respectively to see Commanches home.

English National Hockey League North

Billingham Bombers and Sunderland Chiefs' ENHL North tie at the Forum ice arena on Saturday was called off two hours before the scheduled start. Damage to the ice surface and pipes appeared during the afternoon and could not be repaired in time for the ice surface to be fit to play a match.

Whitley Warriors moved off the bottom of the English Northern Cup following a 7-1 win over Blackburn Hawks at Hillheads. It was Warriors' first victory in the competition and the first period ended 0-0.

Stephen Winn and Daniel Good struck in the second period and Lee Baxter increased the score 23 seconds into the final period when short-handed.

Rob Cairns made it 4-0 after 49 minutes. Late strikes from Ian Emerson, Kevin Bucas and Andrew Tindale pushed Warriors 7-0 ahead.

Netminder Stephen Hoult was looking certain to earn himself a shut-out only for Gordon Whyte to beat Hoult for Hawks consolation strike with only 37 seconds remaining.
