Durham City ASC won the first ever Under-13 Northumberland & Durham Counties water polo championship in the Catterick Garrison Pool on Sunday.
After drawing 7-7 with Catterick Cobras and beating Sedgefield District 11-7, the mixed Durham boys and girls team had to beat Sedgefield in the final play-off game by more than four goals and triumphed with a 12-6 victory.
The whole Durham team performed well. Dominic Neely scored 13 of Durham's goals, Hamish Crichton gave a fine display in goal, Stefan O'Neill was outstanding in defence, and Stephanie Rolfe was the most improved player in the side.
The Wear Cup and gold medals were presented to the victorious Durham team by Colonel JRM Hackett CBE, Commander of Catterick Garrison. The tournament was also attended by Mrs Greta Foulds, President of Northumberland & Durham Counties ASA. The games were refereed by Stuart Bonds (Huddersfield) and Carl Watson (Newcastle).
