CHERIE Blair has added her support to an appeal to help disadvantaged people in Darlington.

The Prime Minister's wife has posted a message on the website for the town's Giving Tree appeal.

It reads: "The Prime Minister and I send our very best wishes to all of those involved in the Giving Tree Appeal in Darlington. Happy Christmas."

Janet Robinson, appeal organiser, said she was delighted to have Mrs Blair's support.

"It is nice to have someone as high profile as Cherie support the appeal and take the time to contact us. We would like more people to leave messages in the guest book and visit the site."

The Giving Tree campaign, organised by Darlington Borough Council's social services department, collects Christmas presents for people who cannot afford them.

Shoppers are asked to buy an extra gift and take it either to The Northern Echo offices, Alpha Radio, Asda or the Matalan store, in Neasham Road. Anyone wishing to raise money is asked to contact Ms Robinson on (01325) 346841. The Giving Tree website is at www.communigate.co.uk/ne/givingtree.
