AS the party season gets under way, the glamour and glitz of uppercrust wartime fashion has been put on show.

Gold sequins and diamante trimmings will catch the eye of any style enthusiast - and the sparkling evening outfits from the 1930s and 1940s are adorned with them.

The collection of apparel and textiles is a new addition to York's Castle Museum's costume gallery.

Visitors can enjoy comparing the frocks and smocks of the past with the evening wear of the 21st Century.

"Fashion regularly repeats itself and the glamorous, slinky fashions that were popular in the 1930s and 1940s could easily be worn today," said the museum's curator of costume and textiles, Josie Sheppard.

"There is a striking similarity between the evening wear available in the shops this Christmas and the dresses on display from our collection."

The display will be a permanent feature at the museum, alongside costumes, jewellery and accessories dating from the 18th to the 20th Century.
