FOOTBALL teams from Ferryhill School have won the Darlington and Durham Racial Equality Cup.

Schools from Darlington and County Durham were invited to take part in the one-day event.

During the day there were a number of displays and events running alongside the five-a-side football tournament.

Pupils tried Asian and Caribbean food while watching a Show Racism the Red Card video.

The boys and girls' year 9 teams from Ferryhill came through tough qualifying groups with games against King James, Bishop Auckland, and Sedgefield Sports College to reach the semi-finals.

Ferryhill boys won their semi-final against Woodham, Newton Aycliffe, and had a rematch with Sedgefield Sports College in the final, which they won 3-2.

The girls beat Tanfield in a penalty shoot-out in their semi-final. They met again in the final after King James had to retire from the competition.

The score was 2-2 at full time, Ferryhill girls again holding their nerve in the penalty shoot-out to win the competition.

Each team won a trophy and individual medals. Rachel Dixon, of Ferryhill School, was also awarded a Newcastle shirt for being the organisers' player of the tournament.

The winning teams were: Boys: Anthony Brown, Lewis Marr, Lewis Newton, Nicky Pickford, Daniel Mitton, Kris Carr.

Girls: Stephanie Tilley, Stephanie Dawson, Lisa Jones, Rachel Dixon, Tanya McManners, Hayley Parker.
