SCHOOLS and businesses in Darlington have been presented with Hygiene and Healthy Eating Awards.
Thirty-two schools and businesses received certificates from Health Minister Alan Milburn yesterday.
The awards are divided into two categories - the Heartwise School Food Award for schools, nurseries and colleges with catering units and the Heartbeat Award for commercial caterers at hotels, restaurants, hospitals, canteens and cafes.
Holders have to show evidence of good hygiene, and provide no-smoking eating areas.
They must also show they promote healthy eating.
The awards have been developed by Darlington Borough Council, Darlington Primary Care Trust and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, and supported by the British Heart Foundation.
Heartwise winners were:
Hurworth House; Kids and Co Nursery; Cockerton Primary; Beaumont Primary; Beaumont Middle; Beaumont Senior; Middleton St George Primary; Corporation Road Infants; Corporation Road Nursery; Abbey Road Juniors; Abbey Road Infants; St John's Primary; Hurworth Primary; Darlington College of Technology Refectory.
Heartbeat winners were:
Orange Nexus Unit; Orange Meridian Unit; Redworth Hall Hotel; Blackwell Grange Hotel; Hugo's Restaurant, Hallgarth Hotel; Stables Bar, Hallgarth Hotel; Memorial Hospital Patient Feeding; Memorial Hospital, Hollies Restaurant; Chatterbox Caf; International Firefighting School, Teesside Airport; Stressholme; Dolphin Centre Caf; Cummins Engines Co Ltd; Elderwood Residential Care; Bannatyne Health Club; Woodlands Health; Darlington College of Technology Restaurant; Darlington College of Technology Bistro.
