HUNDREDS of people are expected to snap up an offer of free entry to a Durham museum.
The DLI, formerly the Durham Light Infantry Museum and Durham Art Gallery, at Aykley Heads, Durham, is running the promotion on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
Visitors will be able to try on and handle First World War items from the museum's collection, including grenades, rifles and helmets, and youngsters will be able to clamber on armoured vehicles and wear military tunics.
The gallery is also hosting Beatrix Potter to Harry Potter, a touring exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery, in London, which is a family show with lots to see and do, including a listening tree.
Another display, In-Art-Iculate, features wacky machines, including a Jelly Wobbler.
The museum's caf will offer visitors a free mince pie with every tea or coffee ordered.
Councillor Alan Cox, of Durham County Council, said: "Museums and galleries in County Durham unfortunately do not enjoy national funding, so we are not in a position to throw open the doors free every day"
The museum will be open from 10am to 4pm.
