THE NORTH-EAST is set to get a healthy jobs boost following the success of the latest trade mission to China, organised through Trade Partners UK.
Hundreds of jobs will be created after MKW Engineering Ltd in Ryton, Gateshead, signed a joint venture with two Chinese companies to manufacture medical equipment in the UK for export worldwide.
The joint venture is the culmination of close cooperation and partnership between the company Trade Partners UK, One NorthEast and Gateshead Council.
MKW Engineering managing director Ian Young said the venture followed a visit in October by a delegation from China
"The delegation was looking for possible partners for the manufacture and development of cancer treatment machines and we were able to convince them that MKW, with our high quality workmanship and culture of client satisfaction, would make the ideal partner."
MKW Engineering group director Michael Wright said: "A lot of equipment used in our hospitals is manufactured abroad and imported to the UK, but this time things are different.
"The equipment we'll be manufacturing will be a whole-body gamma knife and a whole-body hypothermia system, which are both used in the treatment of cancer and make use of some ground-breaking technological developments and innovative engineering solutions."
