A NEW control centre for closed circuit cameras in Hambleton has gone live with the official launch of £120,000 worth of equipment.
Forty-one cameras have moved to a new site at the Civic Centre in Northallerton, where images from Northallerton and Thirsk town centres and car parks can be monitored.
Richmond MP William Hague officially opened the new control point in the purpose-built centre at the Stone Cross headquarters.
Monitoring of the cameras was previously carried out by police civilian staff but since their withdrawal this year, Hambleton District Council staff have taken over the role full-time.
Council leader, Councillor June Imeson, said: "Moving the control room into the confines of the Civic Centre has secured the future of the scheme.
"Centralising the operation will enable us to continue with the planned programme of expansion to bring more of the district under the umbrella of the cameras."
A further five cameras are expected to be added to the scheme next spring in order to monitor Stokesley town centre.
