A SCHOOL has defended its decision to ban a popular soft drink after claims it was making pupils hyperactive.

Brierton Community School, in Hartlepool, stopped students drinking the Dr Pepper brand following advice from the school nurse.

Pupils said behavioural problems had nothing to do with the soft drink, but last night a spokesman said it was part of the school's healthy eating policy.

"We were informed that some fizzy drinks have very high caffeine levels that can contribute to some children becoming hyperactive," said the spokesman.

"Because of this, we have has decided to withdraw some fizzy drinks and sell others in smaller quantities from our can machines."
