THE leather-bound book of remembrance may soon become a thing of the past.
Harrogate Borough Council is hoping to make its books of remembrance accessible all the time via a computer screen.
"Traditionally the vast majority of books of remembrance are opened on an anniversary basis, which means people can only view the pages on the anniversary date each year," said Councillor Pat Marsh, cabinet member for leisure and amenity services.
"However, this new electronic on-screen access to individual records means that the books can be viewed no matter the date.
"It is not intended to replace the leather-bound books, which will still be turned each day.
"It will act as a supplement and allow more flexibility for people who want to visit at other times."
The new form of memorial will run for a trial period at Stonefall Cemetery and Crematorium, Harrogate.
Using a sample swipe card, people will be able to access a trial inscription that includes additional pages for photos of the commemorated person and even biographies and poems.
Coun Marsh said: "We are keen to bring in this service on a permanent basis, which does mean a considerable capital investment.
"Before we make the final decision on the model to be used, we would like to hear from those who have viewed the facility. A short questionnaire will be available at Stonefall.
