POLICE are targeting thieves who are stealing radio and stereo systems from Ford cars.
In less than a month, there have been 41 reported thefts from Fiesta, Focus, Escort and Mondeo models in the Stockton area.
In each case the audio system has been taken and the thieves have carried out systematic searches for the special code numbers needed to retune the radios.
Detective Superintendent Brian Dunn said thefts have been reported in Stockton, Thornaby and Billingham.
He said: "It is obvious the thieves are well organised and have an outlet somewhere where they can get rid of these systems.
"We would appreciate the public's help in trying to track them down.
"The standard Ford stereo system is the target in all break-ins because it all comes out in one block.
"What we have found is that a lot of people have kept the security number for the radio noted down among their car papers in the glove compartment.
"The thieves have cottoned-on to this and in many cases there is evidence of a deliberate search for it."
Police have regularly appealed for people to make sure valuables in cars are kept out of sight to deter opportunist thieves.
Det Supt Dunn said: "If the radio can be removed, remove it when the car is left.
"Do the logical things that would deter the opportunist thief.
"Make life difficult for them and they will look elsewhere."
Anyone with information on car stereo thefts is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, or Stockton's Crime Prevention department on (01642) 302271.
