Strengthening work costing £135,000 on two Teesdale bridges are to begin in the New Year.
Work on Langdon Beck Bridge and Headlam Bridge will begin in January, and officials from Durham County Council have warned motorists that there may be delays.
Work starts at Langdon Beck, on the C30 road, on January 7, and is expected to take eight weeks. Single-lane traffic, controlled by lights, will operate while the reinforced deck slab is replaced, at a cost of more than £80,000.
The second scheme, on the unclassified road at Headlam, will begin on January 13 and is expected to take six weeks.
The road will be closed while the reinforced concrete deck slab is demolished and replaced with a pre-cast concrete box culvert.
Traffic will diverted from the northern side of the closure along the C72 Cakesmire Lane to the B6279, the C30 Gainford Road, and east along the unclassified Rig Head road to the south of the closure.
The work will be carried out by Cumbrian Industrials, part of Durham County Council's Strategic Alliance.
