NEWCASTLE United footballer Clarence Acuna will appear before city magistrates next week on a drink-driving charge.
The club's South American player was stopped by police while at the wheel of his Mercedes car in City Road, Newcastle, on Monday night.
While the rest of the United first- team squad were enjoying a fancy dress Christmas party on Newcastle Quayside, Acuna was taken to Pilgrim Street police station, in the city centre, to give a breath test.
It led to the Chilean star being charged with exceeding the alcohol limit for driving.
He was bailed to appear before Newcastle magistrates on Monday.
The player has been out of first team action recently due to a hamstring injury.
