Durham City ASC under-15 boys and girls mixed water polo team finished second overall to champions Sedgefield District in the Northumberland & Durham Counties championship, played at Catterick Garrison last Sunday.
In their first game, City defeated Catterick Cobras 10-6 in a very enjoyable game. Durham's goal scorers were Joel Woods (4), Philip Rogers (3), Steven Howson (2) and Chris Trotter.
City then came up against a much superior Sedgefield District team which included Scott Carpenter, a GB junior international, Sedgefield winning 23-1. The Durham side never gave up and scored a consolation goal through Rogers.
Sedgefield then went on to defeat Catterick 20-6 to become worthy champions.
Durham finished second with Catterick third.
Durham team: Daniel Howie, Stefan O'Neill, Peter Ward, Alison Mell, Joel Woods, Zoe Bowler, Danielle Brady, Philip Rogers, Chris Trotter, Chris Franklin, Steven Howson, Chris Stevenson, Matthew Barr.
The Durham City water polo squad competed in four county championships in 2002 and finished with one gold, one silver and two bronze medal positions. "This has been a most successful season for Durham City water polo with thirty players receiving county championship medals. Durham players have also been included in all district and county teams," said club official Peter Rawlings.
