LAURIE LAWTON, for many years the head of the Scarborough Council for Voluntary Service, has died at the age of 80.
He had been involved with the group for 31 years and was a prominent charity organiser in the town, setting up the Scarborough Disabled Association, which provides disabled people with activities including swimming lessons.
Mr Lawton, who set up the Dial-a-Ride service in Scarborough, was also involved in the Elders Street Day Centre and was a Methodist lay preacher, scout leader, cricketer and amateur dramatist.
