National Tree Week 2002 has been hailed as one of the most successful ever in County Durham, with more than 4,800 trees planted.
The county council gave grants for more than 50 projects organised by community groups, schools and parish councils for the event, from November 20 to December 1.
One of the biggest projects was at Esh Winning Primary School, near Durham City, where pupils planted 100 native trees.
