A EURO MP from the North says that the UK is leading the way in raising driving standards in Europe.
Yorkshire and Humber MEP David Bowe is urging motorists to keep up the good work in the New Year.
Mr Bowe has highlighted a recent campaign by the French to tackle speeding and drink-driving problems, which result in death rates twice the level in Britain.
"This is one instance in which the French seem happy to hold out the UK as an example they should follow - and even President Chirac and his ministers have been keen to praise what they see as the 'civility' of the British motorist," he said.
"Recently, for example, one of the main television channels in France has been comparing the difference in driving habits - pointing out that in the UK drivers actually stop for pedestrians at crossings!"
