A SCHEME to build 22 homes in Whitby is to be turned down by planners following protests from residents who say valuable open space and wildlife habitat will be lost.
Businessman Roy Jay wants to build the houses at Bog Hall, on a site bounded by the railway and St Hilda's School, but Scarborough Borough Council has been sent a 124-name petition and 19 letters from people in the area.
They fear the houses will become second homes and not accommodation for local people, and they will suffer a loss of privacy.
In addition, protestors say the land has springs which could cause problems for neighbouring householders and land slippage if the site is developed.
Opposition has also come from Whitby Town Council and the resort's civic society, which says the area is not designated for housing.
