THE population of North Yorkshire has grown by about five per cent over the past decade.

The number of people living in the county, which does not include the city of York, is 570,000.

Latest information shows that over the past ten years the population of Ryedale has grown by more than nine per cent, while Harrogate, which has seen a rise of more than seven per cent, is the largest town in the county, with 69,000 residents.

The population of Scarborough has dropped by almost three per cent and stands at just over 52,000. The county town of Northallerton has a population of about 17,500.

The city of York became a unitary authority in the mid-1990s when its area was enlarged, taking in surrounding suburbs and villages.

The population of that area has increased from 173,900 ten years ago to 181,300, a rise of 2.3 per cent.
