PEOPLE are being urged to shed the pounds by taking up skating.
Staff at the open-air ice rink at the Life Science Centre, in Newcastle, have worked out that skaters can burn up to 555 calories in an hour, making skating an ideal way to get into shape.
Karen Brown, who works at the centre, said: "The key to losing weight is a healthy eating plan and exercise.
"Ice skating is an ideal form of exercise as it is lots of fun and burns off an amazing amount of calories."
The ice rink is open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 8pm, and from 11am to 8pm on Sundays.
