PLANS for the 50th anniversary of Darlington's town twinning celebrations will be discussed at a meeting of the borough council's cabinet next week.
The first town twinning exchanges of young people made between Darlington and Amiens, France, and Mlheim an der Ruhr, Germany, took place in 1953.
As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, a visit of people from Mlheim to Darlington will be arranged in June, and Darlington residents will visit the German town in September.
Two local artists will be recruited to exhibit their work in Mlheim and tourism professionals will be sent to stage a tourism exhibition in Mlheim.
Young musicians will be chosen to take part in the Amiens town fete in June and a group of Amiens youth council representatives will be visiting Darlington.
Last April, the council agreed that day-to-day town twinning activities would be co-ordinated by the Darlington and District Town Twinning Association and the council would undertake a programme of celebrations to mark the anniversary.
The total cost of the celebrations will be about £10,000.
Councillors will discuss the plans at a cabinet meeting next Tuesday.
