PLANS are being discussed to make it safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists to use a main route through Darlington.
The project, called the Yarm Road Corridor of Certainty, targets three areas in an effort to improve traffic flow.
They are between the ring road and Neasham Road roundabout, between Neasham Road roundabout and the McMullen Road roundabout, and between that roundabout and the A66.
The work, which should start on the first section in the autumn after consultation and research has been carried out, will involve installing pedestrian crossings, bus stops and a possible widening of the carriageway.
Work on the second section, which could start this financial year, would include a split cycle and pedestrian crossing at the junction of Hundens Lane and Geneva Road, upgrading a pedestrian crossing and installing a toucan crossing in Yarm Road.
Proposals for the third section could include replacing the Lingfield way junction with a roundabout or traffic lights.
All the proposals will be discussed at a meeting of Darlington Borough Council next week.
