TWO villages are going into battle over plans to reduce heavy lorries in one community and increase them in another.
People living in Burton Leonard, near Ripon, are fighting to keep a 7.5tonne weight restriction in their village.
The issue has already prompted a 311-strong petition and a packed public meeting.
But people in Staveley, near Knaresborough, are demanding action to prevent the majority of lorries passing through their village.
Villagers reacted angrily when North Yorkshire County Council decided to consult the public on suggestions to scrap the Burton Leonard weight restrictions in Station Lane.
The petition has also been signed by 28 residents from nearby Wormald Green, an area that would face an increase in the number of lorries on the A61 if the scheme goes ahead.
North Yorkshire County Council says no action will be taken until the public's reaction to the scheme is known. The deadline for a response is Friday, January 24.
