POLICE are renewing their appeal for information following a suspected arson at a family home where three youngsters were rescued by firefighters.
The eldest, a 16-year-old girl, suffered chest problems after inhaling smoke, and was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham. She has since made a full recovery.
The incident happened at Frederick Street South in Meadowfield, near Durham City, at about 1.20am on New Year's Day, when the 16-year-old was looking after her younger sister and brother while their mother celebrated down the street.
A fire broke out at the rear of the house and spread to an adjacent car, believed to belong to its occupants, the Atess family. Firefighters rescued the 16-year-old from a first floor window.
Her younger brother and sister suffered minor injuries and were rescued from the ground floor.
A 15-year-old local youth was arrested on New Year's Day on suspicion of arson and theft, but has since been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the area between midnight and 2am on New Year's Day and saw anything suspicious to contact them on (0191) 386 4222.
