WORK has started on a £460,000 scheme to turn derelict land into social housing.
The development, in Derwent Street, Blackhill, Consett, will see Dunelm Property Services, part of the Esh Group, build six, two-bedroom detached bungalows, one of which is designed for wheelchair users.
Blackhill resident Charlotte Horseman, 93, performed the ground-breaking ceremony this week for the new housing. The project is the fourth partnership between Enterprise 5 Housing Association and Derwentside District Council for the provision of social housing.
Michael Malone, deputy leader of Derwentside District Council, said: "Following an audit of the area's housing needs, we identified a high priority for both older person's accommodation and those with disabled facilities. It is part of the regeneration of the Blackhill area and is the fourth time we have worked with Enterprise 5 Housing Association to provide high quality homes."
Keith Loraine, chief executive of Enterprise 5, said: "Following the success of our nearby Ferndale Court development, were delighted to be working in Derwentside again to provide high quality, affordable homes to local people."
