Darlington will receive a welcome blast from the past next week when players from the 1966 promotion-winning side descend upon Feethams for a nostalgic reunion.

The team, widely regarded by many older Quakers fans as the best in the club's history, will appear before next Saturday's home game against Kidderminster for a pitch presentation.

Among those expected to attend are John Peverell, Ron Greener, Brian Keeble, Tony Moor, Alan Sproates and manager Lol Morgan.

And it was Morgan, appointed player-manager in 1964, who led his side to promotion in the 1965/66 season for the first time in 40 years.

It was through a telephone conversation between former teammates Peverell and Sproates that the idea of a reunion came about.

Sproates, who went on to coach in the US and still lives there, spoke with Peverell over Christmas, when Sproates suggested it would be a good idea to arrange a get-together when he visited the country in the New Year.

"I spoke to Alan over Christmas and he suggested we all meet up before a game," said Peverell.

"It's developed on from there really."

After learning of Sproates' imminent arrival, the Darlington Supporters' Trust have been working to trace other former players from that season.

Trust chairman, Peter Ashmore, said: "Players from this team are still well-known today, many of whom served the club over quite a few years.

"It's a wonderful gesture by the club to honour them in this way.

"I'm sure fans young and old will want to see them together at Feethams again after all this time."

Peverell, who still lives in the area, can't wait to renew one or two old acquaintances, saying: "It should be a great day and I'm looking forward to meeting up with a few old friends. The club has been kind enough to ask us along and we were only too happy to oblige.

"It's been over 25 years since I last saw most of them so we should have plenty to catch up on!"
