HOUSEHOLDERS will be given advice on how to protect the environment and save money in their homes next week.

Wear Valley District Council will hold two energy saving advice days to inform residents how to save energy and access Government grants.

The council believes every resident could improve the energy efficiency of their home so it wants to help private home owners take advantage of grants that are available to install energy-saving measures.

Under the Government's energy efficiency commitment, funding has been secured from utility companies to deliver the scheme which include discounted insulation and grants up to £2,500.

The scheme is not only on offer to people in receipt of benefits, as age and the type of fuel used are considered.

Ian Bloomfield, the council's energy conservation officer, will lead the sessions at the Civic Centre, in Crook, on Tuesday and at Old Bank Chambers, Bishop Auckland, on Thursday, from 10am to 3pm.

He said: "Becoming more energy efficient can save you money, keep you healthy and help the environment."
