PLANS to extend a pub in Yarm have been approved by councillors despite concerns from residents.
Members of Stockton Borough Council's planning committee met yesterday to discuss an application to build a two-storey extension to The New Cross Keys. The application had sought permission to create a beer garden, but that was withdrawn.
High Church Wynd residents were worried the plans would increase the problems of anti-social behaviour they already experience.
At the meeting it was said that matters outside the premises were ones for the police and would not determine a planning application.
Councillor Pete Andrew said: "It is an excellent application, but I would have to say Yarm is a problem. If you are going to live in the middle of a place like Yarm you must expect to have some noise."
Councillor Terry Bean proposed having gates put up to stop revellers going into High Church Wynd, but it was agreed that idea may not work.
Councillor Stephen Smailes was against the plans. He said: "I think this committee has a moral duty to protect the quality of life for those people who live in Yarm."
