COUNCILLORS have moved to correct reports that east Cleveland has the worst record for gritting icy roads in the North-East.
A news report on the BBC this week claimed that only 20 per cent of primary and classified roads in the borough were gritted.
However Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has said that 59 per cent of all main roads in the district were salted and the 20 per cent figure had been given to the BBC by mistake.
In the Stockton Borough Council area, between 40 and 45 per cent of main roads are salted while in Hartlepool the figure is 45 per cent.
This compares with 59 per cent in Sunderland, 50 per cent in York and 30 per cent in Newcastle.
