A BLUEPRINT for the long-term vitality and viability of Hartlepool town centre is to be drawn up.
Officials from Hartlepool Borough Council believe a comprehensive strategy is required to build on the many improvements that have been achieved in recent years and they have appointed consultants RPS to carry out the work.
Peter Scott, head of community strategy and regeneration, said: "The regional retail economy is very competitive and there is a need to have a clear vision for the future growth and management of the town centre.
"The town centre plays a key role in shaping people's perceptions of Hartlepool but vital and viable town centres require sustained and continual reinvestment.
"The strategy will provide a strategic framework so that initiatives are developed and managed in a joined-up way."
Mr Scott said the town centre faced a number of challenges, which included the need to increase investment and marketing, competition from larger centres, redundant buildings and vacant sites in key locations.
He added that transport links also needed to be improved
He said the aims of the strategy would include:
* Supporting present employment and creating jobs;
* Identifying ways of bringing derelict buildings and land back into use;
* Improving accessibility within and to all areas of the town centre;
* Supporting the enhancement of public transport links;
* Improving links between different areas of the town centre for pedestrians and cyclists.
The Hartlepool Economic Forum will oversee preparation of the strategy which will be the subject of extensive consultation as it evolves.
