A FORMER railway line is the latest part of County Durham's expanding cyclepath network.
The Harelaw Wagonway, between Flint Hill and Tanfield Lea, near Stanley, has been converted thanks to County Durham Environmental Trust (Cdent) funding.
The route, to be officially opened in the spring, will give cyclists access to locations in the Kyo area, including a nature reserve.
Cdent's £100,000 contribution has helped finance more than seven kilometres of cycle track and woodland planting.
It is also supporting the production of route maps and display boards showing other local networks, landmarks and facilities.
Derwentside District Council principal planning officer Jeff Singleton said: "With Cdent's support it is now possible for cyclists and walkers to enjoy the beauty of the Kyo countryside without having to resort to their cars or public transport.
"The council is committed to improving cycling opportunities throughout Derwentside, and the Kyo Greenways project, in the Great North Forest, is one of several initiatives that have been developed to expand the local cycle network, providing links between local communities and the national cycle network.
"There are now over 65 kilometres of cycle tracks running across the district."
The Kyo Greenways project includes other routes that provide links between the Bowes Railway Path, the South Stanley Green Corridor and the Consett to Sunderland Railway Path.
