THE cenotaph on Scarborough's Oliver's Mount may be moved following a graffiti attack.
The Scarborough branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) is exploring the idea after extensive damage was caused last week when graffiti was sprayed on the war memorial and the names of people who died in the First and Second world wars were obscured.
Chairman David Balmford said: "We want to see if it is feasible both physically and financially to move the memorial to put it in a less vulnerable place."
He said the move would have to be discussed with the RBL's national headquarters, the War Graves Commission and Scarborough BoroughCouncil. Mr Balmford said another suggestion was to create a new memorial in the centre of Scarborough, and move the plaques from the cenotaph, leaving the monument in place.
