ORGAN builder Herbert Prested, who supplied, repaired and tuned instruments in churches and chapels throughout the region, has died.
His great grandfather set up an organ building business in London, where his grandfather worked for a time.
Mr Prested was apprenticed at the age of 14 and worked with his father, on joining Harrison and Harrison, famous organ builders of Durham City, in 1936.
In the 1950s, he was involved in reconstructing the organ at the Royal Festival Hall.
In 1960 he set up his own business, HE Prested, and although based in Bearpark, Durham, secured organ contracts for churches and chapels across Northern England and Scotland. His work was supplemented by prestigious contracts overseas.
One of his biggest jobs was to restore and extend the organ at Ushaw College in Durham.
During the war, he served with the Army as an anti-tank gunner.
He met and later married his wife of 22 years, June, when they were both aged 58.
His funeral was held at St Giles Church, Durham.
