A HOMELESS man was assaulted in Leeming Road, York, in the early hours of Friday.

The assault took place under a railway bridge known locally as Marble Arch. The man was taken to York District Hospital with facial injuries. Anyone with information is asked to call (01904) 631321.

EXCLUSIVE VIEWING: Colburn residents who have had their bicycles stolen are invited to Richmond police station on Thursday, between 2pm and 4pm. Police have recovered several bicycles and are inviting people to claim them. Proof of ownership must be produced.

BOGUS CALLER: North Yorkshire Police are warning residents to beware of a bogus council official operating in the Scarborough area. The last sighting of the woman was on Tuesday at Staintondale. She is in her forties with dark hair and may drive a blue car.

INQUEST OPENED: An inquest into the death of Jo Paines, whose body was found in a garden in Wetherby Road, Harrogate, last week, was opened and adjourned on Friday.

NEW LIGHT: The Falsgrave lighting scheme, in Scarborough, will begin today. Scarborough Borough Council engineers will start installing 27 street lights in Falsgrave Road at a cost of £97,000. Columns will be topped with Victorian-style lights and brackets for hanging baskets.

TEACHING MOVE: Chris Knowles, 37, headteacher of Kirkbymoorside County Primary School for the past five years, has become headteacher of Newby and Scalby Primary School, Scarborough. He previously taught at West Cliff School, Whitby, and Barrowcliffe, Scarborough.
