A LITTER hit squad began clearing a rubbish-strewn alleyway yesterday as part of a campaign to clean up Darlington.
Council workers decided to target Melville Street after fed-up residents complained about fly-tipping on a special anti-litter hotline.
Shane Shrimpton, the council's parks and open spaces manager, said: "When we got here this morning it was worse than we thought. Someone had been and dumped a sofa and other stuff. It's pretty horrible.
"But we hope by coming out here, people will realise they can ring us to tell us about litter hotspots and we will respond."
The authority launched its anti-litter campaign, backed by The Northern Echo, last month. Residents can call (01325) 388777 to report litter hotspots.
