YOUNG musicians are preparing to battle it out in a competition to find the best in the North-East.
Schools in Newcastle are being asked to put forward their leading students in the search for the first Young Musician.
The contest was organised by the Lord Mayor, Councillor John Marshall, and the city council's schools improvement advisor for music, Steve Halsey.
Coun Marshall said: "This region has an exceptional musical heritage and has produced some of the world's finest and best known musicians.
"The competition will not only applaud the musical talents and skills of our young people, but will also provide an excellent foundation for our stars of the future and support the 2008 bid for Capital of Culture."
It is open to youngsters aged between 12 and 17 who live in or go to school in Newcastle and have achieved at least a Grade Seven in music. It is open to groups of up to five youngsters and all types of musician, from classical and traditional to ethnic and contemporary artists.
The winner will have the chance to perform at civic events in Newcastle throughout the year.
Entrants must submit a performance between six and ten minutes long, on a tape or CD, plus an application form, by Friday.
Those who make the shortlist will be invited to Mansion House, in Newcastle, on Tuesday, February 4, to perform an audition in front of the Lord Mayor and a panel of judges.
For details, or an application form, contact 0191-232 8520, extension 25391, or write to Steve Halsey, at Newcastle City Council, Civic Centre, Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8PU.
