AN 85-YEAR-old man who thought he was doing a neighbour a good deed was rewarded by his jewellery being stolen.
At about 8am on Sunday the pensioner answered the door of his home in the Brinkburn area of Hartlepool to a man who claimed to be a neighbour.
The man tricked his way into the victim's home by asking if he could borrow some tea bags and have some water.
While the elderly man went into his kitchen the caller left, taking with him items of jewellery including a ring and a gold chain.
The thief is described as white and of stout build. He was wearing a black jumper, dark trousers and boots.
Detective Inspector Bob Bussey, of Hartlepool police, said: "This was a despicable attack against a vulnerable, elderly gentleman who thought he was doing a neighbour a favour."
