THE mother of a North-East man who was stabbed to death spoke for the first time of her heartache last night as detectives questioned three teenagers.
Robert Dunne, 31, died following a confrontation outside the post office in the West Lane area of Middlesbrough on Saturday.
Detectives could not confirm reports that he was attacked with a samurai sword as they have yet to find the weapon.
The tragedy happened not far from the home Mr Dunne shared with his girlfriend, Julie, and their nine-month-old son, Liam, in nearby Connaught Road.
Robert's distraught mother, Barbara, yesterday visited the place where her son was attacked.
"I just needed to see where he drew his last breath," she said. "He was such a special person and a great dad and would help anybody out.
"I have come to see all the tributes to him, but he would not wish anyone to grieve."
She had harsh words for Middlesbrough General Hospital where a mix-up meant the family initially thought Mr Dunne was alive and had been discharged when he was already dead.
Mrs Dunne said: "Julie rang me to say there had been an incident and he had been taken to hospital. I rang the hospital and was told he had been discharged. I am so angry."
A hospital spokeswoman said: "The trust is looking into this as a matter of urgency, but we are very sorry for the distress caused to the family."
Three teenagers were arrested yesterday in connection with the killing.
Police said a 19-year-old had walked into Middlesbrough police station. Shortly afterwards a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old surrendered themselves to detectives. All three were accompanied by solicitors.
The teenagers are from the West Lane area of Middlesbrough.
Acting Detective Superintendent Gordon Laing, who is leading the investigation, said police were anxious to speak to everyone who was at the incident.
