Dirty water from the Skerne lifted the Tees by a foot and anglers again failed to catch below Croft during the Thornaby AA Robert Buttery Memorial, writes Jeff Herbert.

The higher numbers towards the end of the Hurworth end of the match length once more proved crucial.

Thornaby's Anthony Smith on peg 42 below Pybus Plantation fence, feeder fished bread in mid-river for a five chub winning bag of 11.2.0.

It was more of the same for Dave Oxley who also finished with five chub in second place. The Darlington rod on peg 72 below Hurworth stump tempted four on the feeder and bread and the other to cheese for 9.14.0 from jt C Hodgson (Darlington) & D Alderson (Middlesbrough) 9.6.0.

The feeder dominated on the Tees as a foot of extra water chilled the Over Dinsdale match length for competitors during the North York South Durham Federation Darlington Angling Centre Trophy.

Haughton's Des Scullion made it two wins on the trot returning 11.6.0. Sat on 101 upstream of Bells Wood liquidised bread in the feeder with flake on the hook brought four chub.

CAC's Dave Harris replied with both chub and grayling to feeder and caster upstream of Rosehill on peg 76, only to fall short with 9.9.8 at the scales.

There was only one double figured net in Idle and Thackley's latest open on the Middle Swale around Swainby as 2ft. of snow water killed sport. Bradford's Peter Gibson on peg five above Swainby Beckmouth tamed three good chub for ten 10.0 as bomb and meat down the edge accounted for two, the other on bread.

A trio of small chub came to the feeder and wasp grub for Brotherton's Adrian Evans located above Maunby Iron Bridge for 8.11.0.

Much to the surprise of the 75 strong entry the River Nidd was low and very clear for Sunday's Bradford Open at Cowthorpe. Oldham's Fred Prudham made his long winter journey pay bagging a cracking 31.5.0.

At the bottom end of the dog kennels length on peg 70 stickfloat and double maggot down the middle resulted in a dozen chub and despite a blank final hour left the others well adrift.

Only other double figure return of 13.10.0 came to Bradford's Bob Newby. Fishing peg 27 above the dip waggler and caster across to far bank willows secured four chub including a super specimen of 5.8.0.

The final round of the Yorkshire Winter League on a bleak Ouse 3ft. up and badly coloured saw Wibsey Angling leapfrog reigning champions York AW take the title.

Sport wise it was another winter grueller as Armley's John Cryowski beat the 80 strong field with just 2.0.0.

On peg 244 among the willows in the middle field at Linton John searched the slack water behind the willow swapping between pole and bomb with red maggot netting eight roach.

Runner up leading the Wibsey triumph at the next peg, 243, Dave Hardy legered maggot enticing small roach and dace totalling 1.14.8.

Top teams on the day: 1 Armley 59 pts; jt 2 Wibsey & Castleford 34; jt 4 Hirst Tackle A and Hirst Tackle B 30;

Final placings: 1 Wibsey 13 pts; 2 Hirst Tackle A 15; 3 York Anglers World 16; 4 Hirst Tackle B 22; 5 Armley 25; 6 Castleford 36; 7 Marsh Tackle 37; 8 Leeds 48.

Carp Scene

A sensational opening hour saw Elton Tackle's Phil Seller take all his fish for a runaway 24.5.0 during the Woodland Lakes Sunday Match spread around Dragonfly Mallard and Swallow.

Sitting on Swallow Lake's peg 14 Phil pushed the pole out to 16 metres along the island side and instantly located carp up to 4.0.0 on the corn.

Leeds Junior Tony Biggins followed of Mallard 15 when the bomb and corn approach made for a brace of carp for 11.1.0.

Woodland Lakes Match (Wed) - Dragonfly Swallow & Mallard Lakes: 1 M McWilliams (Stokesley) 20.2.0; 2 P Hills (Peggy Tub) 12.13.0; 3 A Gregory (Elton Tackle) 10.4.0; Woodland Lakes Match (Sat) Kestrel Wagtail Partridge & Skylark 1 D Bell (North Ormesby) 6.2.0; 2 M Barwick (Selby) 1.1.0;

A severe frost left anglers fishing for odd carp to make the grade during Sunday's Oaks Open on Maple Lake.

Paul Jennings of Wibsey led with 6.6.0. Paul on peg 19 opted for maggot and pole at 13 metres bringing out 3 carp best going 4.0.0. Identical tactics off peg 14 resulted in 3.6.0 for Map Elton's Mark Calvert.

Ferryhill Angling Club's next grayling match is set for Saturday 1st of February at Catterick. Meet 9am - fish 10am. For further details contact Geoff Brewer on (01642) 645370.
