Willie McGeogh has been in jovial mood all week - but he was far from happy before the start of his side's game against table-topping North Shields at the weekend.
The mini bus carrying the Redcar Town team broke down on the A19. A replacement was called for but following a delay the side only arrived at Ralph Gardner Park a few minutes before the scheduled start.
"It was not the best way to prepare for such a difficult game. The lads were all wound up but confronted the critics with a super performance which earned us a splendid victory. I can tell you the mood on the return journey was much different," said McGeogh.
"In fact we did so well that I am thinking of using the same game plan for the rest of the season!"
It has certainly been a topsy-turvy season for the Seasiders. At one stage there was speculation that they might fold but following the appointment of Peter Grassham as manager and the former Middlesbrough player Archie Stevens as coach, the club's fortunes have improved dramatically.
"We were unable to field a side for one match and have twice started a game under-strength but last Saturday we were able to name three subs at North Shields.
"They were on a great run so to come away with a 2-1 win just shows how much progress we have made in a short time. We have a young side and two 15-year olds were in the line-up at Ralph Gardner Park.
"Michael Traynor played in the middle of the park and looked as if he had been there all his life while Johnny Grounds looked equally comfortable on the wing.
"Obviously, this season is one of consolidation but if we can build on what we have achieved recently, and as the youngsters gain experience, then I am sure we can go from strength to strength," enthused McGeogh who is now secretary of the club.
The weather again severely curtailed the programme and only three matches were played. North Shields' defeat still leaves them in pole position but they are just three points ahead of Stokesley SC who have four games in hand.
Birtley Town, whose prestigious Durham Challenge Cup quarter final tie with Wolviston was again postponed, are in an even better position to overtake the Robins. They are just four points adrift of their rivals and have fulfilled six fewer fixtures.
