A RECOVERING heroin addict was yesterday sentenced to 150 hours community service for his part in a burglary.
Paul Coates, 27, of Willow Close, Thornaby, had previously admitted his part in a burglary at Cobden Street, Stockton, in June last year.
Judge Michael Taylor told Coates he would have sent him to jail but was convinced he would end up back on heroin and end up being a greater menace to society.
Teesside Crown Court heard that Coates had acted as a look-out in the burglary where nearly £1,000 of property was stolen. His accomplice had broken a window while the occupiers were out.
The court heard that since the incident Coates had made attempts to give up heroin and was now employed.
As well as the community service order, Coates was ordered to pay £450 compensation.
