A PROGRAMME to help people cope with long-term illnesses is to begin.
Next month, Easington Primary Care Trust (PCT) will start its first expert patient programme.
Part of a national scheme developed by the Department of Health, it will offer courses to help people manage conditions such as arthritis, asthma, back pain, diabetes, heart problems, multiple sclerosis and mental health problems.
They are designed to run alongside medical treatments, and will include advice on finding out information, talking to doctors and coping with depression.
The courses are free and transport will be provided if necessary.
Claire Mathews, health promotion specialist for Easington PCT, said: "The evidence shows that expert patient programmes really work. They can help reduce severe symptoms, improve quality of life and increase patients' confidence."
Between 12 and 16 people are needed to make a course viable, and they will take place over six consecutive weeks, with each session lasting about two hours.
For more information, or to sign up for the first course, starting on February 20, ring Ms Mathews on 0191-554 5724.
