WORK is under way on a new £75,000 closed-circuit TV camera system covering the Bensham and Saltwell areas of Gateshead.
The four-camera system will be linked to Gateshead police station and will be monitored 24 hours a day. Masts will be installed at the corner of Alexandra Road and Oxford Terrace; the corner of Bewick Road and Coatsworth Road; the corner of Whitehall Road and Rectory Road and outside the entrance to St Chad's Church in Rawling Road. Money from the new system will come from Neighbourhood Renewal Funding.
Work is expected to begin soon and the cameras should be fully operational by early spring.
