VILLAGERS are being encouraged to help bring an international feel to their community.
Parish councillors in Hurworth, near Darlington, have backed plans to fly flags from countries across the world on the village green on their national day.
Councillor Rod Burtt has already lined up a handful of householders eager to buy a flag representing their home country.
He said: "Of course, we would not accept any inflammatory displays and I would want some sort of evidence that the resident had a bona fide claim of foreign nationality.
"But I already know of people in the village who are from Sweden, France and Peru, and I imagine there will be many more once the idea takes hold."
Coun Burtt will be seeking local opinion on the idea in his next ward newsletter. Anyone wanting further information can contact him on (01325) 720013.
