KILLJOY motorists who stop youngsters from using a mobile skateboard park are being asked to move their cars.

Sedgefield Borough Council cannot run weekly skateboarding sessions in Spennymoor because drivers are refusing to clear the Festival Walk car park on Wednesday evenings.

The mobile arena includes an American-made ramp called a halfpipe and is popular with young people in Chilton, Fishburn and Newton Aycliffe.

But in Spennymoor, where the town council helps to fund the project, youngsters are left kicking their heels in frustration.

Bernd Bangel, Spennymoor's youth services co-ordinator, said Festival Walk car park was reserved for the park on Wednesdays, between 4.30pm and 8pm.

"Signs have been placed for motorists asking them to clear the car park from 4pm to enable the equipment to be set up.

"Unfortunately, some motorists are ignoring the signs. We have also issued leaflets, but they are still ignored by a small minority and it means the skate park cannot be assembled.

"An assessment of Spennymoor was carried out in advance and Festival Walk car park was identified as the most suitable, central location in the town."
