POLICE were last night hunting three youths who hurled concrete blocks at a bus on a busy town centre route.

The number 23 Arriva North-East bus, in Darlington, from Skerne Park to Whinbush, came under attack at about 10.40pm on Tuesday at Skerne Park terminus on Skerne Park estate.

The driver narrowly escaped injury after a youth stepped in front of the bus and hurled a concrete block at the windscreen.

A second youth threw a block of concrete and smashed the cab window, missing the driver's head by inches. Three passengers were on board the bus at the time.

It is the latest in a serious of incidents on the estate. In October, Arriva North East night bus services were withdrawn following a string of vandalism and assaults.

Last night Arriva North East said it had consulted the police and Darlington Borough Council following the latest incident and had decided not to withdraw services to the estate.

Police are appealing for the three passengers to contact them on (01325) 467681.
