THE Government has announced that South Tyneside will be part of an experiment in electronic voting.
Voters in this May's council elections in the area will, for the first time be able to vote for their preferred candidates over the Internet, by mobile phone text messaging, digital TV, or postal vote.
The Government hopes that the innovations will make elections "more relevant, straightforward and accessible for voters".
South Tyneside is one of 18 areas in the country taking part in the experiment.
